The Torch of Unity for the 2nd Niger Delta Games officially began its journey across the nine participating states from Calabar, Cross River State, on Monday, February 9.
The symbolic torch, which represents peace, unity, and sportsmanship, is set to tour the capitals of all nine Niger Delta states ahead of the Games in Benin City, Edo State.
In Calabar, the torch relay was led by renowned athlete Patience Okon George, alongside officials of the Cross River State Sports Commission and selected athletes. The procession moved from the U.J. Esuene Stadium to the Governor’s Office, where the torch was formally received by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, on behalf of Governor Bassey Otu, and Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, organisers of the Games.
The colourful parade featured young men and women dressed in the iconic Calabar Carnival costumes, dancing to traditional Efik music played from loudspeakers mounted on trucks, creating an atmosphere of excitement and cultural pride.
Addressing the athletes, Deputy Governor Odey assured them of the state government’s commitment to providing adequate equipment and welfare support to ensure outstanding performance at the Games. He encouraged them to uphold fair play and strive for excellence in all competitions.
Sir Itiako Ikpokpo commended members of the State Liaison Committee for organising a vibrant torch tour and urged other participating states to showcase their unique cultural identity during the relay.
According to the official schedule released by the organisers, Akwa Ibom State will host the torch on February 10, followed by Abia on February 11, Imo on March 12, and Rivers State on February 13. Bayelsa will receive the torch on February 14, Delta State on February 16, and Ondo State on February 18.
The torch will finally arrive at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, where it will light the ceremonial cauldron to mark the official opening of the Games. At the closing ceremony, it will be handed over to the next host state.
The Niger Delta Games is organised by Dunamis-Icon Limited and sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
